The results of a TRSA survey

TRSA members say information on government regulations a top priority.

By Klein Merriman

What do TRSA members want most from their association? Up-to-date information on how to comply with government rules and regulations was the answer most often given in a recent survey of member needs.
Like textile rental companies, TRSA provides a service to its customers —you, the textile rental operator. So, it is important for TRSA to have a clear understanding of what members need from their association to ensure the value of membership. That's why the TRSA Membership Committee decided early last year to survey a random sample of members about their needs.
In a nutshell, here's the highlights of what you told us.
There are three main reasons textile rental companies find TRSA membership valuable:

  1. to keep up-to-date on industry developments through TRSA publications,
  2. to support the advancement of the industry, and
  3. to keep current on legislation and regulations affecting the industry.

Environmental regulations were cited as the greatest challenge currently facing members. Respondents also say this is their greatest challenge over the next three years. Only small companies, those with less than $1 million in annual revenue, cited greater challenges such as "competition from larger companies" and "price competition."
When asked what needs these challenges presented that TRSA could assist with, 74.7 percent cited up-to-date information on compliance with government rules and regulations. This was the top priority when cross-tabulated against type of company, size of company, and job description of the respondent.
In a similar vein, the importance of government affairs was highlighted when members were asked to rank a list of services provided by TRSA in order of importance. The top service was representation to federal legislative and regulatory bodies, followed by Textile Rental magazine.
Textile Rental magazine received a particularly high rating with 53 percent describing it as "very valuable" and 46 percent as "valuable." This rating was much higher than the four other industry magazines it was compared with.
Almost 80 percent of the members surveyed had contacted TRSA headquarters for information or assistance in the past year. The majority, 92 percent, described the response from TRSA staff as either "excellent" or "good."
Your input is already directing TRSA's operations. The survey results have been used in the TRSA strategic planning process, by TRSA committee chairmen at the Long Range Planning Committee meeting, and by the TRSA Board of Directors. And it will continue to be used as a guide to developing association activities in the coming year.

About the survey

TRSA hired the Center for Organizational Development, Inc., in Rochester, N.Y., to assist in the design and implementation of the Member Needs Assessment Survey. The overall cost of the project was significantly decreased through the involvement of the TRSA staff and the TRSA Membership Committee. The survey was mailed in April of last year to a representative cross-section of TRSA membership. The nine-page survey asked 47 questions. With a response rate of 33 percent, the survey results are representative of the entire TRSA membership within plus or minus six percent.
The first portion of the survey categorized respondents by size of company, type of company, region, and job title. This "demographic" information allowed cross-tabulation of the results to determine how member needs varied by
company size, company type, region, etc.
The demographic information provides a portrait of TRSA membership. A majority of the respondents described their companies as being "mixed service," with 11.2 percent ''primarily linen supply'' and 8.6 percent "primarily industrial." The remainder were spread among healthcare, dust control, and commercial laundries. Breakdown of respondents by annual revenues is as follows:

  • 15.8 percent with less than $1 million,
  • 44.8 percent between $1 million and $5 million,
  • 12.6 percent between $5 million and $10 million,
  • 15.8 percent between $10 million and $50 million, and
  • 10.9 percent with more than $50 million.
