Article Highlights Canadian Prison Labor

In February, TRSA’s government relations team threw its support behind Rep. Bill Huizenga’s (R-MI) Federal Prison Industries Competition in Contracting Act (H.R. 3634). This bipartisan bill is designed to require federal prison industries in the United States to compete for government contracts on an equal footing with businesses in the private sector. A recent article in The Dominion, a Canadian newspaper, highlighted the issue of prison labor in that country.

The report took a look at CORCAN, a branch of the Correctional Service of Canada (CSC) that coordinates inmate work programs in manufacturing, textile production, industrial laundry and other industries. To view the article, click here.
