Crothall Laundry Services (CLS) recently opened its second LEED-certified facility in Manteca, CA. This facility has the first self-contained ironers that have been approved by the local air quality district in California. The “steamless” facility is designed to produce 55 million pounds of healthcare linen annually, while saving more than 40 million gallons of water. The new facility will offer centralized laundry services to healthcare facilities in both northern and central California.

Western State Design partnered with ARCO/Murray National Construction Co. Inc. to equip and install all the state-of-the-art commercial laundry equipment, including the mechanical room, start-up and training services. The facility has complete automation from an E-Tech sorting system. The overhead monorail system transports linen to an eight-module Milnor CBW (continuous batch washer) with PulseFlow® technology and 300 lb. gas dryers for processing. Clean linen moves to Chicago Dryer Co. Inc. feeding, ironing and folding systems for finishing. Almost all linen is processed automatically through computerized systems with touchscreen controls operated by employees.

“This state-of-the-art facility will utilize the industry’s most environmentally friendly equipment, processes and chemicals, and will support the Manteca community by creating jobs at a time when they are much needed,” said Ian Bigelow, Crothall’s vice president of engineering & technical services. By using plant automation and high-efficiency water heating/reclamation systems and dryers, Crothall also expects to reduce natural gas consumption and total carbon emissions.
