The European Commission recently held a conference on the EU Eco-Management and Audit Scheme (EMAS) in Frankfurt, Germany. The Nov. 13 conference was attended by Vítor Constâncio, vice president of the European Central Bank; Karmenu Vella, European commissioner for environment; and Gunther Adler, state secretary at the German federal ministry for the environment. The Swedish mat laundry company Hr Björkmans Entrémattor was honored at the conference and company founder Carl-Johan Björkman was on hand to receive a certificate recognizing the company’s commitment to eco-friendly operations.

The conference was hosted in the brand-new sustainable buildings of the European Central Bank. It celebrated 20 years of premium environmental management: learning from front runners, promoting best practices and exploiting the full potential of green growth.

The event acknowledged the work of those who joined EMAS as front-runners in their respective countries. Environmental managers highlighted their achievements, demonstrated which benefits can be achieved by using the scheme and shared best-practice approaches to premium environmental management.
