OSHA Electrical Safety Rule Sets FR Guidelines

A final U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) rule outlines new safety requirements for electric utilities and contractors in the areas of information sharing, fall protection, minimum approach distances and electric arc protection. Of key note to textile services companies are the new regulations regarding safety apparel.

The rule requires co-ops to have a reasonable estimate of incident energy created by electric arcs and provide flame-retardant clothing if workers are in conditions where energized equipment could ignite regular clothing. Flame-retardant clothing must be at a rating equal to or higher than the estimated incident energy created by the electric arc. In some cases, face shields will be required.
