Pittsburgh Laundries Employ New Immigrants

A century or more ago, Pittsburgh’s steel mills and related manufacturing operations provided jobs and a better future to thousands of immigrants from Eastern Europe and other regions that longed for opportunities to work and support their families.

Today, news waves of immigrants – mainly legal residents who’ve fled oppression in various parts in Africa and Asia – are now living in Pittsburgh, according to a local news report. They’re launching small businesses, such as ethnic groceries, or working in hospitals and commercial laundries, including CleanCare and Iron City Uniform Rental, the report said. In fact, this influx of nearly 60,000 legal foreign-born residents in Allegheny County is now reaching a “tipping point” in which government and private agencies are having to ramp up their services to meet the growing needs for affordable housing, English language classes and more.
