Telematics: Good Today; Better Tomorrow

As more companies integrate sustainability initiatives into their operations, they should bear in mind the value of fleet telematics as well. This technology is rapidly becoming standard for fleets due to its impact on fuel efficiency.

By using telematics, managers can access features such as real-time reports to identify and correct driving behavior that wastes fuel, including excessive idling, speeding and rapid acceleration, according to a recent online article in Green Fleet Magazine. In one case, these moves saved a company 8% on fuel costs for a fleet of 30 vehicles. That translated to an annual savings of $12,000.

But as useful as this technology is today, it’s likely to be even better in the near future, the article said. For example, engine sensors soon will provide managers with predictive indicators of driving behavior that could increase the risk of an accident. Such information could clear the way for early intervention/training that could reduce the risk of a safety incident. Another improvement anticipated in the near term is better system integration. This advance in technology could enable managers to obtain various types of data through a single log-in, rather than having to access multiple systems separately.
