Provides information, resources and services to improve human resource management and occupational safety and health practices to reduce and eventually eliminate occupational injuries, illnesses and fatalities
The committee provides guidance and content for this meeting (set for May 21-22 in Minneapolis) to enhance TRSA’s efforts to raise the bar among textile services operators for in-plant workplace safety instruction effectiveness and industry-wide improvement. As individual facilities become more sophisticated in injury prevention tactics, TRSA plans to provide further guidance to help operators strategize and increase the prominence of safety in their corporate cultures. Participating in this Summit will help ensure the industry hires the proper expertise, immediately assesses the greatest risks and devises near-term action plans for developing standards and communicating them to operators.
Industry Safety Survey
This questionnaire and the resulting Textile Services Industry Safety Report enables participants to benchmark their safety programs against the industry’s progress and help demonstrate to OSHA that textile services companies are voluntarily improving their safety performance. Submitting data is as simple as copying figures from the OSHA Form 300A that every plant and depot posts in its facilities from February through April. Participation builds the industry’s resistance to OSHA inspections, citations and fines. Individual operators learn key details that determine how their companies rated in the quest toward zero-incident performance in the prior year.
Best Practices Book
Modeling other industries’ efforts to develop guidelines for reducing injury and illness risks, the committee envisions a reference guide that will highlight the most relevant third-party standards (such as OSHA and ANSI), identify equipment risks and other hazards, detail control solutions, discuss prevention planning and list resources. The publication won’t be an exhaustive, authoritative reference but rather an educational tool to assist launderers in identifying their own strategies and tactics.
Illness Recordkeeping Manual
A step-by-step guide will soon be published and a webinar conducted that will explain this tool for documenting safety procedures for reporting and recording work-related injuries and illnesses as required by OSHA and state safety authorities. Launderers will be instructed in describing such injuries and illnesses and filling out the OSHA forms that record these:
- 300: Log of Work-Related Injuries and Illnesses
- 300A: Summary of Work-Related Injuries and Illnesses.
- 301: Injury and Illness Incident Report
Guidance will be provided on which workers are covered by these rules, what must be done to produce an annual summary at the conclusion of each calendar year and how records should be retained and updated. Many other requirements will be discussed including mandates to respond to OSHA surveys and involve employees in recordkeeping.
Alert Driving System
Working with longtime TRSA risk management partner Haylor Freyer & Coon, the committee is rolling out a personal-computer-based modular training program that will enable drivers to learn at their own pace. Topics likely to be covered include distracted driving, adverse weather, speeding, parking and backing, highway driving and failure to yield. It’s anticipated that participating companies will have the option of pre-testing drivers to determine the degree to which they perceive hazards and assign their training accordingly.
