MMI 2014 to Focus on Spectrum of Energy Conservation Opportunities

This year’s TRSA Maintenance Management Institute (MMI) will focus on energy management, as the program will help attendees increase efficiencies in their operations by improving their use of data on power, natural gas and water consumption across the range of laundry plant systems.

The Nov. 5-6 event in Dallas will guide participants in monitoring and measuring energy use so they can identify the most appropriate low-cost conservation techniques and emerging technologies to achieve maximum productivity in their everyday operations. Participants will receive immediately applicable guidelines for evaluating energy data in assessing the condition of in-service equipment.

MMI was previously a two-step program in which attendees participated in two sessions one year apart and did not return thereafter. Under its new format, each year of MMI teaches a new variety of maintenance techniques, addressing the needs of both first-time and repeat attendees by going in-depth on different topics, so participants benefit by attending every year. Other program enhancements include:

  • Plant Tours: Principles in Practice. MMI 2014 participants will visit Aramark Uniform Services’ local plant for more of an investigation than a tour. At the end of classes Wednesday, Nov. 5, they’ll prepare for this Thursday morning visit by mapping steps to observe how the facility’s management implements the principles discussed in Wednesday’s sessions. They’ll discuss their observations with the facility’s management during the tour and in a debriefing/Q&A session afterward. Similar interaction will accompany a same-day visit to Brim Laundry Machinery’s Dallas manufacturing plant.
  • Solutions to Attendees’ Specific Problems: When participants start sessions Wednesday morning, they’ll be asked to note issues or problems they face in their plants that the MMI class can discuss and advise on solving. By the end of the day, they’ll turn in the forms they completed to explain these challenges. The MMI Task Force will review these submissions for presentation in Thursday’s troubleshooting panel discussion.

Task force members, who selected MMI’s 2014 programming and instructors, are Charles Hawkins, technical support supervisor, Pellerin Milnor Corp., Kenner, LA (Task Force Chairman); Bob Corfield, CEO, Laundry Design Group, Phoenix; Paul Hagel, maintenance manager and chief engineer, Health Systems Cooperative Laundry (HSCL), Minneapolis; and Mark Smeraldi, corporate project manager, Morgan Services, Chicago.

MMI primarily serves plant, regional and corporate engineers as well as maintenance managers; others who benefit from attending include plant and general managers and laundry owner/operators. The host hotel for the event is the Embassy Suites Hotel Dallas near the Galleria. Details and registration are available at www.trsa.org/mmi
