Storm Spurs Cancellation of TRSA Annual Conf.

Association plans to support local charities in Houston and Miami

Due to Hurricane Irma, the TRSA Executive Committee has canceled the Annual Conference scheduled for Miami on Sept. 12-14. With regret and sadness in missing the opportunity to spend time with friends and colleagues, the Executive Committee determined that canceling the Annual Conference was the most prudent decision to keep TRSA members safe. TRSA apologizes for any inconveniences.

The current best information from the National Hurricane Center at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) shows Irma, currently a Category 5 storm, impacting southern Florida on Sunday as a Category 4 storm. A storm of this magnitude could cause personal harm and significant damage to the local infrastructure resulting in flooding, power outages and travel cancellations. Even if the storm is downgraded, the personal safety of attendees and guests would be at risk.

In maintaining TRSA’s tradition of supporting charitable organizations in its members’ communities, the association would like to donate all or a portion of the $250,000+ collected in registration fees and sponsorships for the Annual Conference to local charities as identified by TRSA members in the affected areas of Hurricanes Harvey and Irma. Any fees donated will be tax-deductible contributions and TRSA will provide registrants with a letter indicating the amount of the contribution for their records.

An e-mail was sent to conference attendees on Sept. 6. Attendees should respond to this e-mail with a request to either donate all or a portion (%) of your registration and sponsorship fees to local charities, or request a refund.

The TRSA Board of Directors meeting and committee meetings will still occur by teleconference. TRSA staff will communicate directly with the board and respective committees to reschedule their meetings via teleconference. In addition, members will receive mailed ballots pertaining to Bylaws revisions and elections.

The TRSA Annual Conference has long been an opportunity to recognize and reward the accomplishments of volunteer leaders and members that have contributed to the linen, uniform and facility services industry. During this Annual Conference, TRSA had planned to recognize the contributions of two longstanding supporters of the industry and the organization: Ronald Croatti, UniFirst Corp., with the Operator Lifetime Achievement Award; and James Pellerin, Pellerin Milnor Corp., with the Maglin/Biggie Associate Lifetime Achievement Award.

In addition, other members and their respective companies were to be recognized for their length of service to the industry, safety, sustainability and service. These award recipients now will be honored during TRSA’s Leadership & Legislative Conference, March 21-22, 2018, in Arlington, VA.
