TRSA Webinar Details Generational Differences

TRSA’s webinar series continued Nov. 19 with a presentation by members of the association’s Human Resources Committee on fostering communication and managing differences between generations in the workforce. Titled “Engaging a Multi-Generational Workforce,” the webinar was hosted by Deb Elliott, corporate HR manager, AmeriPride Services Inc., Minnetonka, MN; and Katie Rowland, HR manager, Plymate Inc., Shelbyville, IN.

The hour-long presentation kicked off by defining each generation that makes up today’s workforce, including:

  • Traditionalists, born between 1935-49, this group has great respect for authority, is inclined to follow rules and is hard-working and loyal.
  • Boomers, born between 1950-68, this group challenges the rules, values personal satisfaction and pursues high achievements.
  • Gen Xers, born between 1969-84, this group neither follows nor changes rules, but elects to change them entirely, changes jobs frequently and is antiestablishment.
  • Gen Yers, born between 1985-96, this group’s identity is still evolving, but they prefer to create their own rules and are seen as overconfident and self-absorbed.

After outlining the traits of each generation, the webinar detailed how each of these groups interact with each other and managers in the workplace. Knowing that these differences exist can help an organization tailor a corporate strategy to foster a positive work environment individually and also encourage collaboration between each of these generations.

“We understand what motivates each individual generation,” Elliott said. “We facilitate and promote interaction between the generations, and acknowledge the importance of seniority and what they have to bring to the workplace. We want a culture that respects everyone and communication is open. We want to develop training opportunities for everybody and maintain a flexible workplace. What motivates each individual is based on the historical life and work-related experience.

“Build your culture on the shared needs of all these generations. Engage by creating a sense of teamwork. There’s a place for everyone in the world of work. The work ethic of the traditionalists can inspire all groups. The optimism of the boomers can help all employees see the positives within the organization. The skepticism that some of our Gen Xers might have will keep everybody honest. The enthusiasm and self confidence of the millennials is infectious and inspiring to everyone. To manage our multigenerational workforce, recognize that the people who work for you are individuals with human needs. Reward excellence, and encourage and educate those who need mentoring. Engage employees by committing to a shared goal and building a great place to work.”
