TRSA hosted its third webinar during the month of September, this time tackling the topic of workplace wellness in a presentation titled, “Wellness is Working.” The hour-long webinar was presented on Sept. 30 by Jean Chambers, director of wellness, AETNA.

Chambers kicked off the presentation by detailing five steps to getting a wellness program started at your place of business. The steps include:

  • Gather and analyze information
  • Define your goals and objectives
  • Design your strategy
  • Develop an implementation plan
  • Evaluate outcomes and refine your strategy

“Wellness has to be a part of your business,” Chambers said. “It has to be thought through. There has to be a commitment. We have to be thinking about the following questions – Is my communications team willing to help me? Can I get my IT team to help me, maybe with communications, with different tools? Can I get my legal counsel to help me? Can I get my senior management to help me? We have to get some engagement. Engagement must be part of a broader culture.”

Following her introduction about getting a wellness program up and running at your company, Chambers moved on to healthcare reform and the specific steps employers must take to keep their wellness programs in compliance with the standards set forth by the Affordable Care Act. She closed with information about the wellness program in place at AETNA and provided specific examples about how that has benefited the company, in such areas as lower healthcare costs and higher engagement in terms of preventative screenings.

TRSA’s next webinar, “Conflict Resolution for Managers,” will be held on Oct. 7 at 2 p.m. EDT. Click here for more information and to register.
