Webinar Outlines Conflict Resolution Techniques
TRSA opened October with another informative webinar, an Oct. 7 presentation titled, “Conflict Resolution for Managers.” The hour-long webinar was hosted by Guy Harris, master trainer and coach, The Kevin Eikenberry Group, Indianapolis, a consulting company with a focus on leadership and learning.
Harris kicked off the webinar by defining conflict resolution as a plan for mutually agreeable future behaviors and interactions. He then outlined the big picture goals to solving conflicts in the workplace:
- Solve the business problem – the goal of workplace conflict resolution
- Remove sources of threat – identify the likely source or sources, and take positive actions to reduce and/or eliminate the threat, such as apologize, concede a point, etc.
- Focus on the future – don’t try to fix the past, seek agreement on what each person will do in the future
- Address behaviors more than perceptions – goal is to agree on future behaviors, emotions will follow behaviors
- Use clear, assertive communication – describe the impact of past behaviors and move to the future
