TRSA recently presented its first webinar sponsored by the association’s Women in Textile Services Committee. The hour-long presentation was titled “Encouraging Women to Thrive in the Textile Services Industry,” and featured committee members Camille Peters, president, Mobile Computing Corp. Inc. (MCC), Mississauga, Ontario, Canada; and Kelly Miller, vice president, business development, Regent Apparel, San Francisco.

Peters kicked off the webinar with an overview of the unique and different skill sets that women and men bring to the work force, and ways that women can cultivate those skills to drive greater success in the workplace. “Create a personal definition of success,” Peters said. “Create your skills list. Work life equals personal life. Personal life equals work life. We all try to, or like to think, that we keep these two worlds separate. However, you are you, at the core.

“Keep this in mind when building out your skills list. We spoke of how women have inherent characteristics that add value to building out business teams and creating new leaders. Your personal skills are also inherent to you. Your personal life also presents itself in your work life, so don’t fight the segregation, embrace it and applaud it.”

Miller followed up by detailing how women can create a personal brand to increase their visibility. Personal branding is the practice of marketing yourself and your career as a “brand.” Personal branding suggests that success comes from self packaging, and can be used as a way to communicate your values, skills and personality. “Your personal brand is cultivated over time and requires a lot of self reflection and goal setting,” Miller said. “This is usually both the most fun and yet the most difficult part of defining your personal brand.”

TRSA’s next webinar presentation, titled “Working Safely in a Digital World,” is scheduled for Wednesday, May 4, from 2-3 p.m. EST, and will be presented by David Bernstein, president, Lapauw USA LLC, Salt Lake City. Registration is free for TRSA members.

TRSA recently launched a new on-demand learning library that will allow you to live stream all of the association’s webinars. TRSA members can purchase webinars, and other training and educational resources at a reduced member price. Click here to visit TRSA’s On-Demand Learning portal.
