On March 1, the TRSA staff volunteered at the Carpenter’s Shelter in Alexandria, VA, for their monthly teambuilding event. The volunteer event was organized by TRSA’s Senior Director of Marketing Communications Susie Jackson.

For the last 34 years, Carpenter’s Shelter has made it their mission to serve the community by offering temporary housing and hot meals to combat homelessness in the local area. The shelter offers services such as childcare and career coaching, while individuals work to stabilize themselves and find more permanent housing options. The typical stay at the shelter is two months for individuals and three months for families, and those who find permanent housing while being supported by the shelter have had a 93% success rate.

TRSA staff split into groups to complete tasks for the shelter. Some members of the staff worked together by sourcing, preparing and serving a taco lunch to those at the shelter, and then cleaning the kitchen afterwards. Other staff members worked together to build shelving and organize the food pantry. In addition to the resources for the lunch, some of the staff brought in donations for the shelter including non-perishable food items and grocery gift cards.
