A state appellate panel recently announced that it has upheld a $3.4 million verdict awarded to the families of two men who were involved in a fatal incident while cleaning a wastewater treatment tank at a Linden, NJ, laundry in 2007, according to news reports.

The decision, announced Monday, affirmed a verdict handed down in 2014 by an Essex Country jury following a trial against North East Linen Supply Co., the operator of the laundry.

The victims, Carlos Diaz and Victor M. Diaz Jr. (not related), were cleaning the tank at North East Linen when they inhaled toxic fumes that overcame them. Both men died on Dec. 1, 2007.

The estate of Carlos Diaz, 41, Paterson, NJ, was awarded $1.5 million; and the estate of Victor Diaz, 42, Hillside, NJ, was awarded $1.9 million. Company officials did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Click here for details.
