Ecolab Inc., St. Paul, MN, recently issued its 2018 Corporate Sustainability Report, which cited dramatic worldwide savings of natural and manmade resources, including a total of 188 billion gallons of water and 19 trillion Btu of energy preserved through ongoing conservation programs at more than three million customer sites in various industries.

One case study cited in the report concerns the Hilton Hotel chain. With 5,700 properties in 113 countries, Hilton is a global leader in hospitality. With that in mind, in 2018, the hotel chain undertook a new program dubbed “Travel with Purpose 2030.” This initiative was designed as a focused effort to achieve sustainability goals in a number of areas, including a 50% savings in water and a 61% cut in carbon emissions in line with United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

Ecolab partnered with Hilton to tackle these challenges through leadership initiatives, including its “Aquanomic™ Low-Temp Laundry program, which is designed to deliver premium results at lower wash temperatures. This process leaves textiles white and bright, while extending linen life and conserving water and energy, the report says. These and other Ecolab programs are helping Hilton make progress toward its 2030 sustainability goals, the report said.

Specific savings for Hilton cited in the Sustainability Report for the past year include:

  • 417 million gallons (1.6 million cubic meters) of water, which is the equivalent to meet the annual drinking water needs of 1.4 million people
  • 3 million kWh of electricity
  • 3 million lbs. (12,800 metric tons) of CO2 emissions avoided
  • 903,000 lbs. (409,593 kg) of waste recycled

In a cover letter introducing the Sustainability Report, Ecolab Chairman and CEO Doug Baker cited the case studies for Hilton and other companies, including ADM and Colgate-Palmolive, as instances in which Ecolab is achieving progress in advancing its environmental goals. “These stories represent a few examples of how businesses can accelerate meaningful action and create positive impact for their bottom lines, and for the planet,” Baker said. “With today’s expertise and technology, we can change the way the world does business and create a sustainable future for people everywhere.” Click here to download the full report.
