Specialists in maintenance management and employee training across industries and professional development in linen, uniform and facility services will drive discussion at the Jan. 26 TRSA General Managers’ Virtual Roundtable. Facilitators will each cover topics associated with their professions: daily concerns of GMs in our industry as they face the “new normal” in COVID-19’s wake.

See the event webpage to register for this event and learn more about the format; go to the Speakers tab for brief biographies of the facilitators. Their topics:

Compete with Other Industries for Maintenance/Engineering Staff. Learn to promote your operation more effectively as an employer of these professionals. Peter Phillips, a 45-year veteran of this trade, will facilitate roundtable participants’ information-sharing on this topic. He’s spent the past 25 years traveling in North America and Great Britain consulting with a wide spectrum of industries.

Building the Middle Management Team. Benefit from discussion about how GMs effectively manage and supervise department managers. This includes hiring and training direct-management reports and providing them with direction and guidance. Alan Sowers, GM, Alsco, Charlotte, NC, who also held this position for Aramark and Cintas, will keep this conversation going. In the last 10 years, he’s had four of his direct reports promoted to GM elsewhere.

Employee Retention. Get tips to go beyond increasing pay to meet employees’ needs. Guiding this discussion will be Christopher Stammer, who’s worked with the distribution and hospitality industries, as well as ours, on numerous programs and initiatives to support employee performance, growth and satisfaction. This idea exchange will help you prompt your team to better demonstrate to workers that their jobs are skills-based, autonomous yet connected, and purposeful.

GMs are encouraged to use this roundtable to take advantage of industry peers’ insights and expertise for strategic planning. Participation will support GMs’ interaction with senior management, their efforts to contribute to their companies’ direction and focus, and their personal strategies for achieving short- and long-range goals.
