The linen, uniform and facility services industry’s chief maintenance executives, associates and owner/operators recently met in Chicago for two days to develop a baseline for creating a Maintenance Manager Certification Program. Culled from Maintenance Management Institute (MMI) faculty and graduates, the Maintenance Manager Job Analysis Advisory Task Force will oversee the analysis of linen and uniform services maintenance managers serving as subject-matter experts (SME) to assist the consulting firm of PSI to identify and gather resources, develop surveys and guide the overall process of documenting the maintenance manager’s roles, responsibilities, skills, tasks and knowledge.

“Identifying, recruiting and retaining maintenance personnel, particularly skilled, knowledgeable managers is one of our industry’s most troubling issues,” said Joseph Ricci, TRSA president & CEO. “By creating assessment and certification programs based on the work of this Maintenance Management Job Analysis Task Force, we hope to develop training and career-enhancing opportunities to assist in the internal development of the proper skill-sets and improve the retention of these valuable positions.”

Led by Bill Mann, TRSA’s director of industry relations and PSI consultant Cyrus Mirza, the task force included the following:

  • David Beavers, Crothall Laundry Systems
  • Joel Bell, UniFirst
  • Roy Bene, North Texas Healthcare Laundry
  • Ian Bigelow, Crothall Laundry Systems
  • Tim Blecher, Aramark Uniform Services
  • Frank Gundrum, West Michigan Shared Hospital Laundry
  • Todd Hyrn, Western State Design
  • Paul Jewison, Textile Care Services
  • Rob Johnson, HCSA Laundry
  • Charles Juba, Faultless Linen
  • Chip Malboeuf, ImageFirst Healthcare Laundry
  • Sean Mancuso, Dempsey Uniform & Linen
  • Gordon McCauley, Shasta Linen
  • Joe McKeown, Handcraft Services
  • John Pabalan, Kemco Systems
  • Scott Voss, Aramark Uniform Services

The next phase is the development of an industrywide survey to reconfirm the Task Force’s recommendations followed by a subsequent meeting in early 2020 to review the results of the survey and finalize the knowledge, skills and tasks necessary of maintenance managers. The results of the Task Force will be used to create a skills assessment and test development for an industry Maintenance Manager Certification Program, including self-study materials and testing for launch in 2021.
