A recent study by Swedish researchers looked at six commercial laundries in Sweden with a focus on how much microplastic waste was entering their effluent water.

The plants that participated in the study included two healthcare, two workwear, one hospitality and one mat laundry. The study revealed that minute quantities of plastic waste were present in the effluent water. However, the use of waste-water treatment in the plants significantly reduced the quantity of plastic waste in the effluent water, with reductions ranging from 65% to 97%.
