Unitex and other businesses with facilities in Perth Amboy, NJ, recently were recognized by Mayor Wilda Diaz for pulling together to help people in Puerto Rico in the aftermath of Hurricane Maria, which tore through the island, a U.S. territory, on Sept. 20.

The relief effort raised a total of $50,000 and collected 400,000 lbs. of donated supplies, according to a news release. Unitex’ Med-Apparel Division in Perth Amboy donated funds to the effort, the release said.

Trucks loaded with supplies recently set off from Perth Amboy for the Port of Jacksonville, FL. From there, they’ll be loaded onto ships for movement to Puerto Rico, which is still in great need as residents there seek to rebuild from a storm that caused at least 45 fatalities and as much as $85 billion in damage.

Unitex is a major advocate of charitable causes, including local, regional, national and international efforts to respond to a wide range of issues, including those seeking to rebuild after natural disasters like Hurricane Maria.

Unitex President and TRSA Chair David Potack said he was pleased with the outpouring of support that Perth Amboy businesses have shown to those affected by Hurricane Maria. “We are inspired by the city of Perth Amboy and everyone who has come together to help the various communities in Puerto Rico,” Potack said. “The past few months have been challenging for many, so it’s important to see business leaders like those in this city lend a helping hand. We are happy to be a part of that.”
