Keilin Velasquez and Johanna Coronel, both children of White Plains Linen (WPL) employees, recently won the White Plains Linen Family Scholarship, a recognition of both academic performance and community service. The program drew 15 applications accompanied by an essay describing the students’ greatest achievement, for the two $2,500 awards. A greater importance placed on values led to Velasquez and Coronel earning the top prizes, according to a news release.

Velasquez, who will attend SUNY Albany in the fall, is proudest of her induction into the Saint La Salle Honor Society of Manhattan College. This accomplishment is just one stop along the journey to becoming the first in her family to attend college. At Albany, Velasquez will study social work with aspirations of attending law school after finishing her undergraduate studies.

Coronel just finished her junior year at SUNY Geneseo where she majors in mathematics. She wrote about the inspiration that her mother provides as she balances a tireless work ethic with an unwavering love of her family. There is little doubt that Coronel will carry out the values she learned from her mother when she enters the workforce after graduation next year.

“Continued education is vital to success and it is becoming increasingly more expensive, which can put it out of reach for some deserving students,” said White Plains Linen CEO Bruce Botchman. “It has always been important to us to support our incredible White Plains Linen family and this scholarship program is just one more way that we get to do that.”
