The DART rate—a measurement of workplace injuries severe enough to warrant Days Away from work, job Restrictions and/or job Transfers—is the gold standard for benchmarking any organization’s safety record.
DART rate calculations provide individual businesses with the data necessary to effectively and accurately benchmark their safety records as well as track their progress toward enhancing workplace safety over time.
This statistical measurement of an employer’s safety record is highly revered by the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) as well as its regional and state affiliates. The DART rate is a standardized calculation used by OSHA and other regulatory agencies to compare statistically significant data, and to identify workplaces with the highest occupational injury and illness rates. It is not uncommon for the agency to contact such workplaces and urge them to voluntarily take action to remove hazards causing the high rates. In circumstances where an employer is determined to have an extremely high DART rate relative to the entire industry, OSHA may select those facilities for unannounced comprehensive safety inspections under its Site-Specific Targeting (SST) Plan.
An employer’s DART rate is calculated by adding up the total number of injuries and illnesses that had one or more Lost Days, one or more Restricted Days or that resulted in an employee transferring to a different job within the company, and multiplying that number by 200,000, then dividing that number by the number of employee labor hours at the company.
The empirical formula for calculating the DART rate is:
Total Number of DART incidents x 200,000
DART Rate = ————————————————————————-
Number of Employee Labor Hours Worked
Understanding the significance of a workplace’s DART rate—both in terms of benchmarking and tracking a company’s safety record, and in the eyes of the safety community—the Textile Rental Services Association (TRSA) has developed this DART Rate calculator as part of its industry-wide safety initiative, SafeTRSA.
