EMI: Creating Strong Leaders through Education and Networking

Posted March 8, 2019 at 11:29 am

TRSA’s 55th Annual Ehrlich-Stempler Executive Management Institute (EMI) continues the tradition of placing a high value not only on educational benefits but on the strong networks created by attendees of the four-year institute. Relationships among EMI colleagues grow stronger during the four years that EMI attendees gather for training, and even more so as the years pass, and EMI graduates rise within the industry. A recent review of the program shows 41% of the 406 EMI attendees and graduates from 2014-18 are succeeding in higher level positions: 10% now hold the position of general manager, 19% are vice presidents and 12% are company presidents.

Make plans now to enroll a promising employee or two in this year’s institute, set for Aug. 11-15 at the University of Maryland, Hyattsville, MD. Early registration is now open at www.trsa.org/emi and you’ll save a minimum of $400 when registrations are processed before June 28. An invitation to EMI participation is a smart decision as the institute provides a solid return on employee investment. It’s no secret that linen, uniform and facility services businesses traditionally experience a high annual turnover. EMI’s 55-year tradition of applying modern techniques to management issues aids those who attend in tackling high-priority tasks and long-term workplace challenges specific to the industry. In classes led by academics and consultants with industry experience, participants complete EMI by returning for a four-day program once a year for the next three years, each with a different focus toward growing a well-rounded industry executive.

EMI draws attendees from all segments of the linen, uniform and facility services industry, whether the company is a launderer or a supplier of equipment and services to laundries. EMI has a well-rounded attendance of independent companies’ owners, executives and next-generation leaders to chains’ headquarters (including HR/administration) and plant- and depot-based management (GMs, branch and department heads). Individuals who have achieved TRSA’s Certified Professional Laundry Manager (CPLM) certification typically receive 31 credit hours toward recertification by attending EMI.

EMI is hosted concurrently with TRSA’s Roger F. Cocivera Production Management Institute (PMI). Now in its 30th year, PMI program participants spend free time, meals and evening social outings (this year those include two outings – a nighttime tour of the DC monuments and an evening exploring National Harbor) with EMI attendees, creating unique opportunities for information sharing and socializing among leaders in the linen, uniform and facility services industry. EMI is an all-inclusive program, with one fee covering all educational components, meals, lodging, and transportation to and from evening events.
