Study: Copper-Infused Textiles Cut C. diff Rates

The results of a study recently published in the Journal of Hospital Infection showed promise in the use of copper-infused textiles to reduce hospital-acquired infections (HAIs), including Clostridium difficile (C. diff.), according to news reports.

Researchers looked at rates of HAIs caused by C. diff and multidrug resistant organisms at six Norfolk, VA, hospitals that are part of the Sentara Healthcare system.

The study compared infection rates before and after three “parallel intervention periods” of 90, 180 and 240 days, plus three before and after periods. In comparing the three before periods with the three after periods, the researchers found:

  • A 61.2% drop in C. diff-related HAIs per 10,000 patient days between the first before and after period.
  • A 41.1% drop between the second before and after period.
  • A 42.9% drop between the third before and after period.

Industry suppliers Cupron and 1888 Mills also participated in the study as suppliers of the copper-infused textiles. Click here  and here and to learn more.
