The first annual convention since the ‘blending’ of TRSA/UTSA nearly two years ago is coming this Oct. 17-19 at the Lodge at Torrey Pines, La Jolla, CA.

Located just north of San Diego, TRSA’s members-only Convention will feature an array of educational and recreational activities that will challenge your mind, invigorate your spirits and delight your senses.

Top-flight speakers

Speakers at the Convention will include a range of business, financial, legal, safety and political experts, including TRSA’s own Vice President of Government Affairs Charlie Sewell. This veteran of politics in our nation’s capital will provide attendees with a pre-election overview of what’s happening in Washington and what it means for your business.

Other speakers include:
David Casavant
The executive director of the not-for-profit Workplace Safety Awareness Council, Casavant will address efforts to reduce workplace injuries and illnesses nationwide. The title of his talk is, “Help, I’m being audited by OSHA!”

John C. Sullivan
For an insider’s view of safety, Sullivan, senior manager, occupational health and safety, Sodexo, will offer an overview of commonly cited hazards, standards and solutions (i.e., best practices). This former OSHA inspector also will comment on the value of SafeTRSA as a resource. His presentation is dubbed, “OSHA and the Laundry Industry.”

Sean McArdle
Attendees can look forward to gaining tremendous insights on sales and marketing from McArdle, a motivational speaker specializing in sales, negotiations, strategic planning and personal development. Known as “$100 million salesman,” McArdle’s talk is titled “Set Your Sale: Upselling in a Down Economy.”
Jeffrey Wohl and Ryan Hess
For a perspective on wage & hour issues, Wohl and Hess, attorneys with the San Francisco office of PaulHastings, a business law firm with 18 offices worldwide, will tackle a range of legal and regulatory issues confronting operators. Specifically, Wohl and Hess will review the overtime-exempt status classification, employee vs. independent contractor classification, the compensability of an employee’s time and more. Both men have extensive experience in employment law. Their talk is titled “Key Wage & Hour Compliance Requirements for Laundry Operations.”
Todd Buchholtz
The Convention keynote address by Buchholtz will reflect on his experience as director of economic policy in the first Bush administration, as well as his work in the worlds of finance and trend analysis. A prolific author and managing director of the Tiger Hedge Fund, Buchholtz provides regular commentary to media outlets such as CNBC and the Wall Street Journal. He’ll speak to Convention attendees on his recent book, New Ideas from Dead CEOs.

After a morning of speakers on day I of the Convention, attendees may sign up for either the TRSA Golf Tournament at the world-renowned Torrey Pines South course (site of the 2008 U.S. Open), or join nongolfers for the Temecula Valley Wine Country Tour. If golf is your thing, we suggest you sign up ASAP – the tournament is limited to 48 full registrants. Otherwise, the tours of the Callaway and Thornton wineries will offer a delightful diversion for tasting and learning about fine California wines in a stunningly beauty natural setting.

Networking and more

In addition to speakers and recreational opportunities, the Convention will feature a number of association meetings, including sessions of the Board of Directors and the Executive Committee of the Board. TRSA’s 98th Annual Membership Meeting also will take place at the Convention. This event will include the election of new Board members, including a new Chairman, Woody Ostrow of CleanCare. Afterward, attendees will enjoy an evening of music and dancing in the rustic-yet-luxurious Torrey Pines Lodge.
