Current Projects

Commercial laundry operations have been targeted as major point sources for microparticle discharges, even though collectively, our industry releases far less compared to discharges from home washing. Still, California introduced legislation to require our operators to filter 100% of all microfibers from our wastewater, which could cost over $500,000 per plant. While TRSA successfully advocated to shut down this bill, it will likely be reintroduced next legislative session. TRSA remains vigilant in addressing policies that could harm our members and the essential sectors that they serve.

Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS)

PFAS are a group of man-made chemicals with a wide range of uses in consumer products, including textiles, for their durable qualities including water, oil, stain and heat resistance. PFAS can get into the effluent wastewater from commercial laundries, for instance, through the processing of PFAS-coated textiles such as hospital gowns. The Environment and Sustainability Committee is gathering information about PFAS in the supply chain and sharing insight on compliance with local, state and federal regulations. TRSA meets with EPA officials to ensure they understand our industry’s de minimis impact.

Publicly Owned Treatment Works (POTW) Manual

The Committee is enhancing the Working with Your POTW manual to ensure it is user-friendly for plant and floor managers, the individuals in plant operations most responsible for assuring compliance with POTW permit requirements. The update will feature new case studies.
