Cintas’ Sustainable Journey
Cintas’ environmental sustainability journey is deeply rooted in the foundation of the company, which dates back to the Great Depression. Richard (Doc) Farmer, an unemployed circus performer, identified a financial opportunity at local factories that were buying wiping rags to clean machinery and wipe up heavy, industrial soils and spills. Once the rags were soiled, they were transported in drums and shipped to a dump or incinerator. Doc Farmer’s idea was to take the soiled rags, recycle them by cleaning them at home and sell them back to the factories.
