Compliance Issues: pH Control

This month’s column draws (in part) on a still-valid Textile Rental article from 1997 that opposed lowering wastewater pH before discharging it to the sewer. 
 
Many publicly owned treatment works (POTWs) require that you treat your water for pH to comply with local limits. If you approach your local wastewater authority, the following information could help you obtain regulatory relief on this issue. Many ordinances include a pH limit mostly because, “It’s always been there,” rather than for any sound environmental or regulatory reason.
