EPA’s ‘Safer Detergents’—A Solution in Search of a Problem

In May and June, TRSA and UTSA participated in efforts to convince the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) that their voluntary Safer Detergents Stewardship Initiative (SDSI) lacks the scientific data necessary to justify the program.

While alternative detergents are available, they would have no positive impact on the environment, and it would cost the industry significantly more to use them. Much of our information comes from the detergent producers through APERC, a trade group representing the manufacturers.
