Fixing ‘Holes’ in Hurricane Coverage

The 2007 Atlantic hurricane season is expected to be heavy duty compared to last year’s relatively benign tropical tempests. Hurricane experts at Colorado State University and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) anticipate 17 “named” squalls, nine hurricane-level storms and five more hurricanes classified as “intense.” At least one hurricane is likely make landfall somewhere in the eastern United States, the experts add. Will it match—or perhaps exceed—the destructive power of Katrina in August 2005? As the season officially began June 1 and ends Nov. 30, we’ll soon find out.
