Hispanic Immigrant Employees: Creating a Cultural Comfort Zone

Immigrant Hispanic workers often speak little or no English, yet this valuable workforce is known to work hard and eagerly accept overtime. They are also more likely to be injured in the workplace—more than any other demographic group, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). In 2013 (the latest BLS figures available) overall work-related fatalities (3,929) dropped 6% from 2012. Yet fatalities among Hispanics rose 7%, and at 787 reached their highest level since 2008. For laundry operators, the good news is that proactive training that focuses on bridging cultural/communication differences can enhance workplace incident-prevention efforts.
