Recently, we ran across an article in The Washington Post on the history of steam laundries in the District of Columbia. Local columnist John Kelley researched the Post’s archives, including a 1940 article on the topic. Kelley explained how in the years before automatic washers and dryers were widely available, a laundry truck would pick up soiled clothing from homes, take it to the plant for processing and return it clean and folded a few days later.
