New Orleans Response: Emphasize Qualified Testing, Best Practices

By now, you’ve heard the news of a link between healthcare linens and the spread of a deadly fungus that resulted in five deaths at a New Orleans pediatric hospital in 2008-’09. The incident has drawn coverage from New Orleans TV and print media outlets to The New York Times.
 
The impetus for all this attention came from a study published in the May issue of the Pediatric Infectious Disease Journal titled “Mucormycosis Outbreak Associated with Hospital Linens.” The study noted several lapses in the hospital’s infection-control efforts and sloppy handling of contaminated linens.
