NPEs & Intersex Fish: ‘Might’ Makes ‘Right’

Federal scientists have indicated that intersex fish are more prevalent in streams near population centers and heavily farmed areas. They have actually been aware of this phenomenon in the Potomac River since 2000. However, it does make one wonder about the magnitude of potential impact that detergent products––in use for 40 years—may have on water quality. Scientists do not know if there is a threat to human health, but they do suspect the presence of farm chemicals, residuals of human hormones or birth control pills in sewage discharges to be the potential cause.
