‘Opportunities in Work Clothes’—The Art and Science of Troubleshooting

A philosopher once described problems as “opportunities in work clothes.”  Yet, this phrase seems overly optimistic when confronting a problem.  Troubleshooting is both art and science.  As an art, it requires a talent for observation, a wealth of background knowledge and a practiced technique.  Those components also make it a science when thoughtfully organized and exercised.  Talented troubleshooters are not born—they’re made.  The key is to recognize the problem, precisely define it with resolution goals, review the signs and symptoms so causal agent(s) can be addressed and results measured against the goals.
