OSHA Questions Safety-Incentive Programs
Employers that use certain types of incentive programs to encourage safe workplaces should carefully review their efforts in light of recent OSHA action. This past March, OSHA issued a guidance memorandum taking the position that safety-incentive programs that link awards to reductions in employee injuries—for example, awarding groups of employees with a pizza party when their employees achieve an injury-rate reduction—may improperly discourage employees from reporting injuries. Accordingly, OSHA plans to carefully scrutinize these programs during OSHA inspections.
