Overtime—New Rules, Costly Penalties

The risks associated with failing to pay overtime to nonexempt workers are about to get dicier. That’s because effective Dec. 1, new regulations from the U.S. Department of Labor will take effect that will more than double the minimum salary needed to qualify for an exemption under the federal Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA). Employers now must act quickly (if they haven’t already done so) to review their workforce and reclassify individuals as required.
