Should regulators require hospitals to use a set proportion of reusable isolation gowns and other personal protective equipment (PPE) to ensure reliable supplies in case of another pandemic?
"The images of nurses with garbage bags over their scrubs are not easily forgotten. We’ve learned many lessons from the Pandemic, including some around the limited elasticity of the supply chain. It makes good operational and clinical sense for hospitals to maintain, or be required to maintain, a balanced inventory of reusable PPEs as part of their emergency-preparedness plans. The environmental sustainability of reusable textiles/PPEs is just icing on the cake."
