As the second quarter of 2006 begins, U.S. businesses continue to confront numerous challenges, including the need for retooling to meet the demands of today’s global market. 
 
To put it another way, change continues to be the order of the day. For example, recent automobile plant closings, with Ford alone eliminating 30,000 jobs, have signaled an ongoing decline—or at least a dramatic transformation—in U.S. industrial capacity. Other issues, such as rising healthcare costs and the ongoing threat of infectious disease, also affect the ability of firms to operate effectively.
