HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE
Since 1828, when the first two-pass, firetube boiler was developed, the basic boiler component parts have remained the same. Steam boilers with these component parts, a heat source, typically a hand-stoked coal or wood-fueled flame, a natural-draft induced, large-diameter furnace tube with corrugated walls, and bundles of multiple, small diameter tubes were developed principally for marine use and became known as Scotch marine boilers. That nomenclature and basic boiler design is still dominant in today’s industrial laundry and other process steam application industries.
