I grew up in Washington surrounded by a transient community of military, law enforcement, legislators and others; often the best and the brightest came here for short deployments or assignments far from home. These diverse individuals from varied religious, political and socioeconomic backgrounds—as well as fervent sport’s team affiliations—become “family” despite these differences. We lived, worked and played together. We learned to leverage our differences to improve our communities and our country.
