Is there value in providing noncash awards, such as vacations or merchandise, to encourage salespeople to exceed their goals?

"I most assuredly feel there is value in providing noncash rewards to people who excel and are going above and beyond! When I was chairman of the TRSA Marketing Committee, we had an ‘Above and Beyond’ national service award. I truly feel there is a benefit to rewarding such behavior. Allocation of dollars toward merchandise that we sell from the catalog is an excellent way, since the company buys at wholesale this can be an immense savings for the associate who is being rewarded.
