Who Needs Science?—The Debate Over Washroom Detergents
The status of nonylphenol ethoxylates (NPEs) spurred concern at a recent joint Environmental Committee Meeting because that chemical is a primary ingredient in washroom detergents.
Some green activists have criticized the impact of NPEs on the environment. Concerns center on the aquatic toxicity of nonylphenol (NP), an ingredient in the manufacture of NPEs and a component of their breakdown in wastewater treatment. Anxiety also stems from the potential for adding to the disruption of endocrine systems of aquatic organisms and possibly humans. These concerns should be addressed with basic scientific data.
