Recent political upheavals—including security concerns in the United States, war in the Middle East and an ongoing surge in global energy prices—have obscured the fact that U.S. industrial production and consumer spending continue to grow briskly. 
 
Durable orders for U.S. manufactured goods in July rose 3.1%, while consumer spending rose 1.45%. The latter figure exceeded a consensus forecast of 0.8%. Meanwhile, the U.S. economy has created more than 2.3 million jobs in the past year.
