A 2024 survey of Hygienically Clean Healthcare-certified and HLAC-accredited laundry operators found that only 20% of acute and nonacute healthcare requests for proposal (RFPs) require certification/accreditation with any preference for either program. This survey served as a baseline as TRSA launched an 18-month outreach program to decisionmakers and influencers, promoting the value of Hygienically Clean certification and reusable textiles.

The results are in: After two media campaigns, there has been a 164% increase in the share of TRSA members who reported seeing RFPs request Hygienically Clean certification at least 50% of the time. This significant growth demonstrates the impact of TRSA’s educational and advocacy efforts.

The campaign, launched in August 2024, included an investment of nearly $500,000 over 18 months on sponsorships, trade shows, speaking engagements, advertising, earned media and marketing materials for certified facilities. These efforts targeted outlets that reach decisionmakers and influencers, promoting the inclusion of Hygienically Clean Healthcare and Food Safety in RFPs for acute/nonacute healthcare and food manufacturing/processing.

“TRSA’s Board of Directors approved additional funding to continue its Hygienically Clean promotional campaign based on its positive impact in increasing direct references to the certification program in RFPs for supplying, laundering and maintaining textiles,” said TRSA President and CEO Joseph Ricci.

The most recent survey also produced testimonials from participants explaining why they chose Hygienically Clean certification:

  • “We are actively growing our presence in the healthcare market, and this certification shows that we are serious about protecting our customers and our employees.”
  • “We felt it was the right thing to do to ensure our customers and community we serve with the best linen possible.”
  • “To set ourselves apart as offering the best possible service, and to hold ourselves accountable for providing quality and operating the way we are supposed to.”
  • “We want to be proactive in letting our customers know that we are in compliance with industry hygiene standards.”
  • “Hygienically Clean provides an ‘easy answer’ to customers’ questions about our processes. It is much simpler to just show an independent third-party certification rather than explain everything in detail.”

In recognition of the campaign’s impact, the TRSA Board of Directors approved funding at its November meeting to extend the Hygienically Clean promotional campaign through 2026.
