Ohio State Sen. George F. Lang (R) has introduced Senate Bill 344 (SB 344), legislation designed to increase the amount of reusable textiles in healthcare facilities.

SB 344 proposes the enactment of Section 3701.95 of the Ohio Revised Code, establishing clear definitions and requirements surrounding the use and processing of infection prevention textiles – reusable, fabric-based protective items designed to safeguard patients and medical personnel. Sen. Lang is the bill’s primary sponsor.

The legislation requires reusable protective textiles to be processed in ‘hygienically clean certified facilities,’ ensuring they are free of pathogens at levels sufficient to prevent disease transmission.

SB 344 applies to a wide range of Ohio healthcare facilities, including hospitals, nursing homes, hospices, ambulatory surgical centers, dialysis centers, rehabilitation facilities, birthing centers, radiation centers and pediatric respite care programs.

The introduction of SB 344 continues TRSA’s efforts to strengthen infection control standards and support safe, sustainable reuse of protective textiles in healthcare. The bill now proceeds to committee review for further consideration.
