The work of TRSA’s Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (DEI) Committee was recognized at a recent luncheon in New York as a finalist in Ragan Communication’s 2023 CSR & Diversity Awards. TRSA was awarded Honorable Mention in the Training category for its DEI Safe Space Series.

The Safe Space Series is a series of events, some held in-person and others virtual, that help develop and promote best practices within the realms of racial, social, sexual and gender diversity. The DEI Committee determines topics and develops programs based on member feedback. Session topics have covered a wide range of issues, including women in textile services, coping with burnout, managing stress, addressing racial equity and workplace culture.

These DEI events are informational sessions that host a variety of speakers and experts in the field. Since its launch in 2021, TRSA has hosted 12 virtual and three in-person DEI Safe Space Series events.

“Our Safe Space Series is a platform that fosters difficult but necessary conversations among our members,” said Salita Jones, TRSA’s director of events and education, and DEI Committee liaison. “We help them learn how to handle various situations with tact, understanding and respect, while providing them with a space and an opportunity to learn and express themselves in a safe environment, free from persecution or retaliation. We meet them where they are and encourage them to grow at their own pace.”

Accepting the award at The Yale Club in New York with Salita Jones was Meredyth Ellington, TRSA’s database administrator and HR Committee liaison and Kortney Overzet, vice president of people development & culture at Spindle and chair of the TRSA DEI Committee.

“Ragan Communications congratulates all the finalists who have been selected for their exceptional contributions in driving positive change and fostering inclusivity within their organizations and communities,” said Brendan Gannon, senior marketing manager for Ragan’s award programs.
