Technologies, Training, Accidents on 4/23 TRSA Fleet Safety Agenda
Session topics for TRSA’s April 23 Fleet Safety Summit will cover high priority topics for risk management based on opinions of members of the TRSA task force on this subject. These presentations are the centerpiece of the TRSA event, located at the NAFA (Fleet Management Association) Institute & Expo, April 21-24, San Antonio, TX.
The Summit includes NAFA Expo Hall admission and receptions and the TRSA sessions:
Dashcams/Telematics: Key to Insurance Cost Control. Michael Halter, loss control director, Haylor, Freyer & Coon Inc. (HFC), will offer examples of how to maximize the effectiveness of these technologies in defending drivers and controlling premium costs. See how these trackers combine with other measures to avoid litigation. They include effective driver training and monitoring, safe driving rules, distracted driving policies, drug/alcohol testing and post-accident response. HFC is TRSA’s Business Solutions insurance partner. Before joining the firm, Halter was a health and safety consultant and regional manager for Marsh. Previously he was a loss control consultant for Chubb North America and CIGNA.
Accident and Near-Miss Investigation. Review steps in the process of gathering comprehensive evidence that demonstrates a driver acted responsibly and wasn’t at fault in an accident. Learn tactics for securing the scene (driver’s safety, scene preservation, witness information, police report), investigating driver performance, examining vehicle maintenance records, assessing weather and road conditions, and know when to involve outside help from specialists in accident reconstruction or legalities. Don Bock, TRSA Safety Committee liaison, will present. He served 10+ years as the risk and safety director for Mission Linen Supply after 20-plus years with the company managing operations, including a district manager position.
Muscle Memory in Defensive Driving. Receive guidance for training drivers in ways that prompt them to act properly behind the wheel when a challenge arises – without their having to think much about it. Judie Nuskey, operations director, Advanced Driver Training Services (ADTS), will cover the need to vary training solutions for new, existing, and medium- and high-risk drivers. Emphasis will be on defensive driving as a learned skill, requiring drivers to practice correct methods to ensure acquired skill levels don’t diminish. Since 1983, ADTS has created and developed programs to protect fleet drivers and their companies’ bottom lines through diverse training offerings proven to reduce vehicle crashes.
These sessions are scheduled for 2 to 4:30 p.m., Tuesday, April 23. The Expo is open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. that day and 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. the following day. The Summit includes participation in separate NAFA afternoon (happy hour) and evening (after party) social events April 23 and the closing party in the evening April 24.
