An op-ed by TRSA President & CEO Joseph Ricci was published on Earth Day in Healthcare Purchasing News, making the case that sustainability in healthcare is not an added cost – but a proven cost strategy.

In the April 22 article titled, Sustainability is a Cost Strategy, Not an Unaffordable Luxury, Ricci challenges the assumption that hospitals can’t afford sustainable practices, pointing instead to the measurable financial and environmental benefits of reusable textiles.

“Sustainability is not a luxury – it is a necessity,” Ricci says in the article. “In the case of reusable textiles, it is a practical, data-driven procurement strategy that delivers measurable savings and a more environmentally sustainable healthcare future.”

The op-ed highlights research showing significant cost savings compared to disposable products, along with reductions in waste, energy use and emissions – reinforcing the role reusable textiles can play in helping healthcare systems improve both financial performance and environmental outcomes.

To support member outreach, TRSA also released an Earth Day Toolkit that communicates the environmental and business value of reusable textiles.

The Earth Day Google Display campaign delivered strong year-over-year gains, reaching over 335,000 impressions, a 187% increase over 2025, with clicks up 174%, driven by higher spend and a more efficient bid strategy. Even with a slightly lower click-through rate (CTR), the campaign achieved a 51% reduction in cost per click and a significantly lower CPM, indicating improved efficiency and scale.
